The Modern Sisyphus


This cartoon, appearing March 16, 1844, was drawn by Richard Doyle. Sir Robert Peel is portrayed as Sisyphus, pushing a rock which is simultaneously labelled “IRELAND” and “Daniel O’Connell.” Under the title is written:

“Sisyphus is said to be doomed for ever to roll to the top of a great mountain a stone, which continually falls down again.”
