The Battle of Limerick

This cartoon, appearing May 13, 1848, was drawn by John Leech. The monkey is John Mitchel, the dog is William Smith O’Brien, and the man fleeing in the background is Thomas Francis Meagher. All three Young Irelanders are running from a rock labelled “MORAL FORCE,” Punch’s alternative to Young Ireland’s call for “Physical Force.”

Mitchell was promptly arrested for his writings and convicted of treason-felony by a packed jury.
