Rint v. Potatoes– The Irish Jeremy Diddler

DiddlerThis cartoon, appearing November 15, 1845, was drawn by John Leech. The Irish peasant woman is beseeching O’Connell, “You haven’t got such a thing as Twelve-pence about you?– A Farthing a week– a Penny a month– a Shilling a year?”

Jeremy Diddler was a con man in James Kenney’s 1803 Raising the Wind. The name was subsequently used to designate anyone as a con man.
